Why You May Need A CDL

Having a CDL opens a whole new world of large equipment operation. While typically you put 18-wheeler trucks and CDL’s together, these specialized licenses are often used for other equipment as well. From buses, to box trucks, to fire trucks, and more, having a CDL is essential. To operate and even own these vehicles, you must have a CDL proving that you’re qualified to handle them. Plus, it can benefit you as an asset in a lot of career changes.  Here’s what you need to know.

What exactly does a CDL do?

CDL is short for a commercial driver’s license. Every state in the US requires this license to operate any CMV, or commercial motor vehicle. You cannot get this license at the same time you get your Class C license. Class C is the standard license that every one of driving age can receive when they turn 16. You must be at least 21 years old with a CDL and already have your Class C license. Commercial vehicles are operated a lot differently than your standard cars. CMV drivers need to have the physical ability, knowledge, experience, and skill to drive these vehicles in all kinds of conditions safely.

Having a CDL can be beneficial in a lot of ways, especially for your job. In some cases, you’ll be sought out more because of that CDL. You’ll have the freedom to drive trucks like 18-wheelers, construction, EMS, firefighting, or even being able to rent a CMV if your load is too much for a standard vehicle.

How does that affect Gilroy Chiropractic?

When you first get your CDL, and every time you get it renewed, you have to get a physical proving you’re still physically able to drive. The doctors have to be certified to give the examinations. Your local doctor may no longer give these exams. Urgent care can usually provide you with the physicals, but they can be swamped, even if you have an appointment. We are happy to say that at Gilroy Family Chiropractic Center, Dr. Ryan Gilroy is on the National Registry of Commercial Medical Examiners and can perform exams for your DOT physicals. We offer consistent, ethical exams at one of the lowest prices in the area. There won’t be any long wait times that Urgent Care might have. You’ll be seen as quickly as possible according to our appointment schedule. Same-day appointments are available! Dr. Gilroy will perform exams remotely if your company has four or more drivers to be seen at the same time.
